I like to move it move it
Part of the journey of the slim soul is to introduce moving your body more in ways that are sustainable and fun. I avoid using the term exercise because to me it conjures up images of sweaty people in stuffy gyms with everyone staring at you if you are overweight. Besides, as a mother of four, gyms are off territory: who has time to go to a gym, have a shower or a hot tub and get back to life? Perhaps the most dauting aspect is the gym culture of being stared at and of a lot of regulars showing off their bodies. I call exercise "boogie" and it reminds me of how much I love to move it move it move it.
This time around, I did the same as when I started running: I started slowly. I know I am not supposed to run for another three weeks (six weeks after the birth) so I just started walking more. This was already such an immense pleasure as towards the end of my pregnancy, that privilege was denied to me. I could hardly walk from the bed to a chair. This week, for example, apart from running around the house after my three children, I walked my younger son to school twice. It is a good 2 miles hike down hill and then back up and it usually gives me quite a good sweat. I had baby in a sling as well and pushed the pram so it did feel like getting back into shape.
The secret is to gradually pushing your body gently beyond the limits of what it is used to do. My secret, however, is to keep it fun and not to do too much too soon. I absolutely do not suscribe to the myth that you have to hurt the next day or it to have been "effective". To me its not only against nature... it is masochism. Besides why would I want to load my body with toxins?
Blessings of lightness
